Namibia bids farewell to President Hage Geingob, the nation’s revered leader, who was laid to rest at the iconic Heroes’ Acre on the outskirts of Windhoek. President Geingob, the third president of Namibia, passed away on 4 February and was interred on Sunday, 25 February amidst a solemn ceremony.
The late President Geingob succumbed to cancer shortly after his diagnosis was made public on 17 January, leaving behind his beloved wife Monica Geingos, eight children, siblings, and grandchildren. In a poignant tribute during his final memorial service, Monica Geingos described her husband as a man of profound sincerity, a quality that endeared him to the hearts of many. She shared, “Hage had a special ability to connect with people. He rose from humble beginnings as a peasant to the pinnacle of leadership as a president.”
The funeral procession was a gathering of dignitaries and mourners from diverse backgrounds, both locally and internationally. Representatives from 27 countries, including 18 heads of state, graced the occasion. African leaders such as South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Angolan President João Lourenço, Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi, and Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa paid their respects alongside global figures like Princess Anne of the British royal family, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Finnish President Sauli Niinistö, and Qatari President Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.
The solemn procession to Geingob’s final resting place was led by a distinguished group of pallbearers, including notable figures like former agriculture minister Alpheus !Naruseb, deputy prime minister John Mutorwa, and official opposition leader McHenry Venaani. The Heroes’ Acre, a revered landmark in Namibia, serves as the burial ground for esteemed individuals bestowed with the title of hero. Geingob now rests in one of the nine symbolic graves reserved for heads of state, watched over by the ‘Unknown Soldier’ statue, standing as a sentinel of honor over his grave.
