The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, TUC, has announced its decision not to join the two-day nationwide protests organized by the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, on February 27 and 28. TUC President, Festus Osifo, revealed this during a press conference in Abuja, emphasizing that TUC was not involved in the planning of the protests against economic hardships.
While abstaining from the protests, Mr. Osifo called for immediate discussions on passing the new national minimum wage into law. He expressed concerns over the escalating levels of hunger and hardship experienced by Nigerian workers and the population at large, attributing these challenges to uncontrolled Naira devaluation and insecurity across the country.
In addressing the economic issues, TUC proposed a series of solutions including stabilizing the value of the Naira, combating speculative trading in the foreign exchange market, promoting domestic goods, and enhancing security measures to prevent crude oil theft. The congress believes that implementing these measures, along with other suggested actions, will alleviate the sufferings faced by Nigerian workers and vulnerable groups.
TUC intends to submit its comprehensive document to the government, aiming to initiate a constructive dialogue for the effective implementation of the proposed solutions. Through strategic engagement, TUC seeks to pave the way for a brighter economic future for all stakeholders in Nigeria.
