Segun Odegbami Urges NFF to Hire Indigenous Coach for Super Eagles

Segun Odegbami, a former Nigeria international, has urged the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to consider appointing a local coach to lead the Super Eagles. In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, Odegbami emphasized the importance of looking within the country for coaching talent.

The recent departure of Jose Peseiro as the head coach of the Super Eagles has sparked speculation about his successor. Names like Emmanuel Amuneke, Sunday Oliseh, and Augustine Eguavoen have been thrown into the mix. However, Odegbami believes that it is time for Nigeria to break free from the colonial mindset that only foreign coaches can bring success.

“We have plenty of qualified Nigerians who can take our national team to great heights. Football is not a complex game, and we have the talent right here at home,” Odegbami stated. He expressed frustration at the trend of Nigerian professionals excelling abroad while their own country fails to harness their expertise.

Odegbami dismissed the notion that Peseiro resigned, clarifying that his contract simply expired and was not renewed. He urged the NFF to prioritize local talent and give Nigerian coaches the opportunity to showcase their skills on the international stage.

As the debate over the next Super Eagles coach continues, Odegbami’s call for a homegrown leader resonates with many who believe in the wealth of footballing knowledge within Nigeria. It is a plea for recognition of local expertise and a step towards reclaiming Nigeria’s footballing identity.
