Northern Initiative Accuses Court of Appeal of Usurping Tribunal Powers

The Northern Initiative for the Defence of Democracy and Justice has raised concerns about the Court of Appeal’s interference in the Kogi State Governorship Petition Tribunal’s proceedings. The group, led by Co-ordinator Nureeddeen Sadiq, expressed worry over the potential implications for the judiciary and the country as a whole.

According to the group, the Appeal Court in Abuja attempted to overturn the decision of the Kogi State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal regarding the inspection of electoral materials from the November 11, 2023, election. This move was seen as unprecedented and a threat to the tribunal’s independence.

The tribunal, tasked with fact-finding, had issued orders for the inspection of election materials, which were duly served to all parties involved. However, the Court of Appeal’s decision to set aside these orders and mandate fresh inspections with the participation of one of the parties, Usman Ododo of the All Progressives Congress, raised questions about judicial overreach.

The group emphasized the importance of upholding the tribunal’s authority to issue directives and conduct its operations without external interference. They highlighted the need for transparency and adherence to due process in electoral dispute resolution.

Despite the Court of Appeal’s ruling, the Northern Initiative for the Defence of Democracy and Justice remains steadfast in its commitment to upholding the integrity of the judiciary and ensuring fair and just outcomes in electoral disputes. They called for respect for the tribunal’s decisions and a focus on upholding the rule of law.

The group’s advocacy for judicial independence and adherence to legal procedures serves as a reminder of the importance of safeguarding the integrity of the electoral process and upholding democratic principles in Nigeria. Their efforts to hold accountable those who seek to undermine the judiciary’s role in resolving disputes reflect a commitment to upholding the rule of law and promoting transparency in governance.

By shedding light on the challenges facing the Kogi State Governorship Petition Tribunal and advocating for judicial autonomy, the Northern Initiative for the Defence of Democracy and Justice plays a crucial role in safeguarding the democratic process and ensuring accountability in Nigeria’s electoral system.
