NTBLCP Ekiti State Urges Media to Boost TB Awareness for Better Prevention and Treatment

The Tuberculosis, Leprosy, and Buruli Ulcer Control Programme (NTBLCP) in Ekiti State, in collaboration with Breakthrough ACTION-Nigeria, recently hosted a one-day TB Media Personnel Refresher Training in Ado-Ekiti. The training, sponsored by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), aimed to empower journalists to raise awareness about the prevention and treatment of Tuberculosis (TB) in society.

During the event, Orojo Joshua Adebayo, the Programme Manager of NTBLCP in Ekiti State, emphasized the crucial role of the media in disseminating accurate information about TB. He urged journalists to increase their coverage of TB-related issues to educate the public effectively. Adebayo highlighted the importance of individuals getting tested for TB to determine their status, as early detection can lead to timely treatment.

Dr. Akintunde Ogunsakin, the Director of Community and Family Health at the Ekiti State Primary Health Live Development Agency, expressed concern about the low turnout of TB patients for treatment despite the availability of free services in Primary Health Care facilities. He emphasized the need for the public to proactively seek medical assistance for TB symptoms such as prolonged cough, weight loss, weakness, night sweats, and fever.

Participants at the training commended the organizers for the initiative and pledged to utilize their platforms to raise awareness about TB and encourage community members to seek timely medical intervention. The event underscored the importance of collaborative efforts between the media, healthcare providers, and the public in combating TB effectively.

By leveraging the power of the media, individuals can access vital information about TB prevention, testing, and treatment, ultimately contributing to the eradication of this infectious disease. Together, we can make a difference in the fight against TB.
