The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs has set the tentative dates of March 11 and March 12, 2024, for the start of the annual Ramadan fast, pending the sighting of the moon after sunset on Sunday, March 10, 2024.
In a statement released by the Deputy Secretary-General of the NSCIA, Prof Salisu Shehu, the council called on the Muslim Ummah to look for the crescent of Ramadan 1445 on the 29th Sha’aban 1445 AH. They also urged those who spot the crescent to inform the National Moon Sighting Committee.
Under the leadership of President-General and Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence, Alh. Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, the NSCIA extended greetings to the Muslim Ummah for the upcoming 1445 AH Ramadan Fast. The council expressed hope that all Muslims would be able to participate in the worship activities and reap the benefits.
The President-General advised the Nigerian Muslim Ummah to search for the crescent of Ramadan 1445 AH immediately after sunset on Sunday, March 10, 2024. If the crescent is sighted, Monday, March 11, 2024, will be declared as the first day of Ramadan 1445 AH. If not, Tuesday, March 12, 2024, will be the first day.
The statement also called on affluent Muslims to show charity to the less fortunate and cautioned traders against price gouging during the fasting period. It emphasized the importance of using the holy month of Ramadan to pray for the well-being of Palestinians and their liberation from oppression.
