The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has reported that a series of cable cuts have caused equipment faults on major undersea cables along the West African Coast, impacting data and fixed telecom services in several countries. This disruption has affected countries such as Nigeria, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Senegal, and others.
The NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, Dr. Reuben Muoka, stated that the cable cuts occurred in Cote de’Ivoire and Senegal, leading to disruptions in Portugal as well. The West African Cable System (WACS) and African Coast to Europe (ACE) have experienced faults, while SAT3 and MainOne have downtime.
Additionally, undersea cables providing traffic from Europe to the East Coast of Africa, such as Seacom, Europe India Gateway (EIG), and Asia-Africa-Europe 1 (AAE1), have also been affected by cuts around the Red Sea, causing service degradation on these routes.
Internet access and speed in Nigeria and other West African countries have been disrupted, with service providers working to repair the cables and restore services. The operators have assured that they are working tirelessly to ensure services are back to normal as soon as possible.
