As the scarcity of naira grips the country, some artisans in Sokoto State have continued to reject money‑transfer payments in favor of cash. Our correspondent, who monitored the situation, found that the majority of artisans refuse electronic transfers because of persistent network problems.
Yusuf Welder explained his decision to stop accepting transfers, noting that most of them end up being reversed back to the sender. “I can’t take a transfer as payment for my service at all. If you transfer money to me, where would I get the cash? I cannot leave my shop to spend an entire day at an ATM centre, and the POS fees are exorbitant. I cannot take that risk,” he said.
Similarly, motor mechanic Monday Andrew cited the naira shortage as the main reason for his stance. He reported that most of the transfers he received from customers last week never entered his account, prompting his drastic decision to refuse electronic payments.
