As the Ondo State governorship primary election approaches, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is calling on Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) to actively engage with political parties and observe their primaries. This move is aimed at promoting inclusivity for under-represented groups such as women, youths, and Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) in elective offices at both the National and State levels.

During the first quarterly consultative meeting with CSOs, INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, emphasized the importance of CSOs participating in the upcoming governorship election in Ondo State. With sixteen political parties expressing interest in participating, it is crucial for CSOs to monitor the primaries to ensure transparency and fairness in the electoral process.

Prof. Mahmood Yakubu urged CSOs to not only engage with INEC but also with political parties to strengthen their advocacy for inclusivity. By observing the primaries and deploying observers to the main election, CSOs can play a vital role in promoting diversity and representation in governance.

In a statement, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu stated, “By engaging with Political Parties and observing their primaries, CSOs can amplify their advocacy for inclusivity for marginalized groups such as women, youths, and Persons with Disabilities. It is essential to ensure that these groups are adequately represented in elective offices at both the National and State levels.”

As the political landscape in Ondo State evolves in the coming weeks, the involvement of CSOs in monitoring the primaries will be crucial in ensuring a fair and inclusive electoral process. By actively engaging with political parties and advocating for inclusivity, CSOs can contribute to a more representative and democratic governance system in Nigeria.
