The Benue Government has taken a decisive step to address security threats and protect the well-being of its residents by suspending all mining activities in the state. Governor Hyacinth Alia met with members of the Miners Association of Nigeria, Benue Chapter in Makurdi and directed the Mineral Resources and Environment Management Committee (MIREMCO) to compile data of all miners in the state.

The governor emphasized the importance of conducting this revalidation exercise to ensure the safety of residents, particularly in areas like Kwande where water sources have been contaminated. He urged security agencies and the joint task force on illegal mining to uphold the law and enhance the state’s revenue generation.

State Commissioner for Justice and Public Order, Fidelis Mnyim, clarified that the government’s intention is not to halt mining activities entirely but to crack down on illegal practices. The state has developed a checklist to regulate the mining sector effectively.

Chairman of the Nigeria Miners Association in Benue, John Tersugh, and Mining officer from the Federal Ministry of Mining and Solid Minerals, Mr. Simon Ogwu, pledged their support to the government’s efforts to sanitize the mining sector. Miners Benjamin Nyior and Dennis Tarhemba highlighted the need for a conducive working environment to carry out their activities effectively.

Members of the association also raised concerns about multiple taxation and the lack of necessary mining equipment. They appealed to the governor to address these issues to boost the industry and contribute to the state’s revenue profile.

By prioritizing the safety and well-being of its residents, the Benue Government is taking proactive measures to ensure sustainable and responsible mining practices in the state.
