Senator Smart Adeyemi, Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Federal Capital Territory and representative of Kogi West Senatorial District, urged President Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) to reconsider his stance on the current naira scarcity and act within the next seven days. Speaking to journalists in Abuja, Adeyemi highlighted the unbearable suffering of the people and pleaded for immediate action to prevent further deaths. He noted that while President Buhari is not responsible for the shortage, the crisis is being exacerbated by “hypocrites on the corridor of power.”

The senator reminded the President that many artisans and small‑scale business owners keep their cash at home, and recent deaths have occurred because people could not afford medication. “As good as this policy is, we should not allow the poor masses to bear the pains for the atrocities committed by the elite,” Adeyemi said. He warned that a seven‑day deadline is too long, noting ongoing demonstrations and violent reactions across the country.

Adeyemi praised President Buhari as a statesman who has fought for national unity and remained committed to governing. However, he emphasized that “three days is like one year for people to bear,” stressing his responsibility as an elected official to convey the populace’s anguish. “Every day feels like a year,” he added, pointing out that artisans are dying daily and questioning how ordinary citizens can afford to obtain money.

Concluding his remarks, the senator thanked the President for his concern but warned that “no woman in the labour room will survive another seven days of labour.” He acknowledged Buhari’s efforts despite insecurity and criticized those surrounding the President as hypocrites. “The poor are shouting. This is the worst policy anyone can think of,” Adeyemi said.
