The Peoples Democratic Party, Labour Party and African Action Congress have opposed a request from the Lagos State Parks Management Committee, led by Musiliu Akinsanya (MC Oluomo), to handle sensitive election materials for the upcoming governorship elections. In January, the Lagos State Parks and Garages Management (LASPG) wrote to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), informing it that the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) had been banned by the Lagos State Government and by several other South‑West states. The committee asked INEC to place the logistics of sensitive electoral materials under its jurisdiction.
The letter stated, in part: “The Lagos State Parks and Garages Management hereby brings to your notice that Lagos State and states such as Oyo, Ogun, Ondo, Osun and some others are no longer under the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) for transportation matters, but under the respective State Parks and Garages. Our notification and request are imperative to prevent technical and administrative gaps in transporting logistics and deploying or retrieving election materials and personnel to and from all polling points in the aforementioned states during the forthcoming 2023 general election. If not addressed promptly, this could affect election day. We, Lagos State Parks and Garages, under the chairmanship of Alhaji (Dr.) Musiliu Ayinde Akinsanya, request that INEC investigate this information and ensure that all transportation‑related arrangements in Lagos State are overseen by us, as the operation of NURTW in Lagos State has been suspended.”
Attempts to contact INEC spokesperson Adenike Oriowo and the Resident Electoral Commissioner for the state, Olusegun Agbaje, were unsuccessful. In response to the LASPG letter, Labour Party State Secretary Chief Sam Okpala said the party was uncomfortable with LASPG’s involvement, citing the “obvious loyalty” of Akinsanya (MC‑Oluomo) to the All Progressive Congress presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.
