The Inter Party Advisory Council (IPAC) in Jigawa State is pushing for changes to the state’s electoral law to give political parties a 360-day notice period to adequately prepare for elections. This proposal was put forth during a special meeting in Dutse, the state capital, on Monday.
In a statement signed by Chairman Murtala Musa and Secretary Isa Adams, the council stressed the need for reform in light of the current economic, social, and political challenges facing the state’s residents. They highlighted the significant hardships being experienced by the populace and called for urgent action from all stakeholders.
The council also pointed out the upcoming end of the tenure of current local government officials and the economic difficulties being faced by both the state and its citizens. To address these issues, they recommended amending the electoral law to give political parties a year-long notice period for proper preparation.
As a result, the council unanimously suggested postponing the local government election to a later date. Originally scheduled for June, the election may be rescheduled to allow for the necessary reforms to take place.
This move by IPAC aims to ensure that political parties have adequate time to organize and campaign effectively, ultimately leading to a more transparent and fair electoral process in Jigawa State.
