The FCT Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS) has clarified that a recent appeal court judgment in Delta exempting private vehicles from obtaining roadworthiness certificates will not apply in the territory. In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, Kalu Emetu, the Head of Public Relations and Enlightenment at DRTS, emphasized that each state has its own traffic rules and regulations.
Emetu explained that the judgment in Delta should not be generalized to other states, as traffic laws are state-specific. He highlighted the differences in how vehicle inspections are conducted in various states, noting that the judgment in Delta only applies within that state.
While traffic laws fall under CAP548 of the Laws of the Federation, Emetu emphasized that states have the autonomy to implement their own regulations. He stressed that judgments must align with state regulations before being enforced.
In conclusion, Emetu affirmed that the renewal of roadworthiness certificates in the FCT is based on specific regulations set by the administration. Therefore, motorists in the FCT will continue to be required to renew their certificates as per the established guidelines.
