Protesters Block Port Harcourt Airport Over Lack of Power Supply

The residents of Omagwa and Ipo communities in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State have taken a stand by blocking the entrance to the Port Harcourt International Airport. Their protest stems from the lack of power supply and essential amenities in their area.

This demonstration has not only disrupted flight operations, leaving air travelers stranded, but has also caused a traffic gridlock that extends from the Airport Road to neighboring communities. The protesters, who gathered as early as 7 am on Wednesday, expressed their frustration at the situation.

Despite being home to an international airport, the residents feel neglected. They endure daily noise pollution from the airport without any compensation. Additionally, they highlighted the absence of good schools in the area as another pressing issue.

One protester, identified as Oki, voiced their grievances, stating, “We in Omagwa and Ipo have been living without electricity for over a decade. We demand compensation for the constant noise pollution emanating from the airport. We are exhausted and that’s why we are here.”

The images captured during the protest depict the determination and unity of the community members as they seek to bring attention to their plight. As the situation unfolds, further details will be provided.

It is essential to respect the rights of individuals and communities to voice their concerns and advocate for necessary improvements. This story serves as a reminder of the importance of addressing the needs of all citizens, regardless of their location or background.
