IBEDC Cuts Power Supply to UCH Over N400 Million Debt Dispute
In a surprising turn of events, the University of Ibadan College Hospital, UCH, found itself in the dark as the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company, IBEDC, announced a disconnection of power supply due to an outstanding debt of over N400 million. The Chief Key Accounts Officer of IBEDC, Johnson Tinuoye, made the announcement, citing the hospital’s uncooperative attitude towards addressing the long-standing debt as the reason for the drastic measure.
Despite numerous attempts to engage with the hospital’s management over the past six years, IBEDC was left with no choice but to disconnect UCH from the power grid. The unpaid electricity bills not only hinder IBEDC’s ability to meet its obligations to power generators but also contribute to the nationwide issue of low power supply.
UCH, which operates more than 70 diesel-generating sets, incurs a high cost of energy production at 400 Naira per kilowatt, significantly higher than the tariff of 74 Naira per kilowatt set by IBEDC. Despite providing infrastructure for 20-24 hours of dedicated power supply to UCH, the hospital has failed to settle its outstanding debt or propose a feasible repayment plan.
IBEDC pointed out that other Teaching Hospitals within its franchise, such as those in Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, and University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, Kwara State, promptly settle their bills. The company questions why UCH has not followed suit.
While UCH denies the outstanding debt claim, stating that they have made significant payments in recent months, the staff at the hospital expressed their frustration at being left in darkness. As the dispute between UCH and IBEDC continues, the importance of timely payment for electricity consumption is emphasized to ensure the viability of the sector.
As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the two parties will resolve their differences and restore power to the vital healthcare facility. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
