Tragic Auto Crash in Kogi: 13 Dead, 2 Injured in Cement Truck Collision

Thirteen people tragically lost their lives, and two others sustained injuries in a devastating auto crash in Kogi, as reported by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC). The incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, involving a commercial Sharon Bus and an articulated Cement Truck near Obajana Market along Obajana – Lokoja Road in Lokoja Local Government Area.

According to Samuel Oyedeji, the Kogi FRSC Sector Commander, the Sharon bus had stopped behind a truck at the market for passengers to make purchases when the cement truck, unable to brake, collided with it from behind. The impact caused a fire that engulfed the bus, two trucks, and a motorcycle, resulting in a tragic loss of life.

Rescue operations by FRSC personnel, Red Cross Nigeria, and the police were hindered by the intensity of the fire. The charred remains of the victims were recovered, while the injured individuals were rushed to Fisayo Hospital in Obajana for medical treatment. Sadly, no hospital in Kogi was willing to keep the charred bodies, raising concerns about a potential mass burial if no relatives come forward.

Mr. Oyedeji emphasized the importance of road safety, urging motorists to avoid speeding and ensure proper vehicle maintenance before embarking on journeys. This heartbreaking incident serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of negligence on the road.

Let us all heed the cautionary tale of this tragic event and prioritize safety on our roads to prevent such devastating accidents in the future.
