The Federal Government’s 37-member tripartite committee on minimum wage is gearing up to reconvene in mid-April for further negotiations on the new minimum wage. President Bola Tinubu is expected to announce the new National Minimum Wage for Nigerian workers on May 1, 2024, as reported by DAILY NIGERIAN.

The upcoming minimum wage is anticipated to alleviate the impact of the removal of subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit. Hakeem Ambali, the National Treasurer of the Nigeria Labour Congress, revealed to The Punch that the committee is currently analyzing the reports gathered from zonal public hearings.

During these hearings, different regions proposed varying amounts for the minimum wage. The South West suggested N794,000, the North East proposed N560,000, the North West suggested N485,000, the North Central proposed N709,000, the South South demanded N850,000, and the South East demanded N540,000.

Mr. Ambali indicated that the committee is in the process of compiling and analyzing these zonal reports. The next meeting of the committee is scheduled for mid-April. The panel, established by Mr. Tinubu through Vice President Kashim Shettima on January 30, comprises members from federal and state governments, the private sector, and organized labor, with the aim of recommending a new national minimum wage for Nigeria.
