The Benue State Independent Electoral Commission (BSIEC) has set the stage for local government elections in 23 Local Government Areas on July 6, 2023. This announcement was made by Chairman John Chen during a stakeholders’ meeting in Makurdi, the state capital.
Chen emphasized that the elections will cover the positions of chairmen and councilors in the local government councils and council wards, including newly created ones. The decision to hold these elections was prompted by the governor’s directive for the commission to ensure transparent and credible electoral processes.
In his address, Chen assured stakeholders that BSIEC is committed to conducting free and fair elections, steering clear of any fraudulent practices. He highlighted the importance of avoiding sham elections, which often result in ineffective leadership and poor governance.
Furthermore, BSIEC revealed plans to introduce additional council wards in Benue State to accommodate the growing population and enhance grassroots representation. This initiative aims to bring governance closer to the people and ensure equitable distribution of resources.
