UDF candidate Atupele Muluzi has sounded the alarm to international human rights activists regarding the repeated arrests of comedian turned activist Bon Kalindo by the MCP government. Muluzi took to social media to express his concerns about the authoritarian tactics being used against Kalindo, stating that the exploitation of poverty and dependence in Malawi is deeply troubling.
The Magistrates Court in Lilongwe recently granted bail to Kalindo, who was arrested on 2 April 2024 for allegedly spreading false news through a WhatsApp voice note that could incite panic among the public. Principal Resident Magistrate Rodrick Michongwe outlined the conditions of the bail, including regular visits to the police station, surrendering of electronic devices for investigation, and providing a copy of his National Identity card for tracking purposes. Failure to comply with these conditions could result in the revocation of bail.
Despite being granted bail, Kalindo will remain in custody due to another pending case where he is accused of possessing a firearm without a permit.
