Ohanaeze Ndigbo Urges South-East Leaders to Unite for Nnamdi Kanu’s Release

The Ohanaeze Ndigbo, a prominent Igbo socio-political organization, has called upon the five South-East governors, along with traditional and religious leaders, to unite and advocate for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Independent Peoples of Biafra (IPOB).

In a statement titled “Addressing the concerns surrounding Nnamdi Kanu’s detention,” the Secretary-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, expressed disappointment in the lack of unity and decisive action among the Southeast governors and other key stakeholders in supporting Kanu’s cause. The organization emphasized the need for a collective effort to push for Kanu’s release.

Efforts to secure Kanu’s release have intensified, with Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, revealing ongoing political solutions alongside court processes. The rejection of Kanu’s bail application by the Federal High Court in Abuja has raised concerns about his deteriorating health and safety while in detention by the Department of State Services.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo has announced plans to engage in discussions with influential figures such as the Oba of Lagos, the Sultan of Sokoto, and Asari Dokubo to further advocate for Kanu’s release. The organization stressed the importance of diplomatic approaches and seeking forgiveness from those involved in Kanu’s detention to facilitate a peaceful resolution.

By emphasizing dialogue, unity, and diplomatic engagement, Ohanaeze Ndigbo aims to secure Kanu’s freedom and address the root causes of insecurity in the region. The organization remains steadfast in its commitment to seeing Kanu released and urges all parties to prioritize reconciliation and cooperation towards achieving this common goal.
