Nigeria international Alex Iwobi reconnected with his former club, Arsenal, after Everton defeated the Gunners on Saturday afternoon, Sports Extra reports. The Toffees caused one of the season’s major upsets by beating the Premier League leaders in Sean Dyche’s first game in charge. James Tarkowski headed in a Dwight McNeil corner on the hour mark, sending Goodison Park wild, boosting Everton’s hopes of avoiding relegation and dealing Arsenal a blow in their title pursuit.
Iwobi, 26, had a fine game on the left flank, troubling Ben White as Mikel Arteta’s men were outclassed for the first time in months. After the morale‑boosting victory, he took to social media, posting, “Nice To See Some Old Faces, Even Better To Win!” He also shared an Instagram story with pictures of himself training at Arsenal and embracing Arteta after Saturday’s fixture, captioned “Big respect!”
Although Iwobi left Arsenal a few months before Arteta succeeded Unai Emery at the Emirates, he broke into the Gunners’ first team in the 2015/16 season and was briefly teammates with the Spaniard. The Nigeria international spent 15 years on Arsenal’s books, joining in 2004 while still in primary school. He went on to score 15 goals in 149 appearances for his boyhood club, helping them win the FA Cup in 2017 before moving to Merseyside in a £34 million transfer two years later.
Despite Everton’s win over Arsenal, the Toffees remain in the relegation zone with 18 points from 21 matches.
