Ethiopia’s Accession to East Africa Community: Boosting Regional Integration and Cooperation

Ethiopia is on the verge of joining the East Africa Community (EAC), a move that will increase the bloc’s population to 420 million people and expand the number of member countries to nine. This exciting development was announced by Peninah Malonza, Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of East African Community, signaling the final stages of discussions between Ethiopia and the Heads of State of the EAC Summit.

The inclusion of Ethiopia in the EAC highlights the bloc’s dedication to regional integration and cooperation, with the aim of breaking down trade barriers through a single customs union. This follows Somalia’s recent admission into the bloc, demonstrating a growing push towards unity among East African nations.

The EAC member states are currently working on harmonizing policies and establishing institutions to facilitate the realization of a single currency for the region, in line with the objectives outlined in the EAC Monetary Union Protocol.

The EAC, an intergovernmental organization comprising eight partner states, focuses on promoting economic, social, and political cooperation among its members. With headquarters in Arusha, Tanzania, the EAC plays a crucial role in promoting peace, stability, and sustainable development in the East African region.

Ethiopia’s upcoming membership in the EAC signifies a significant step towards strengthening regional ties and fostering collective progress.
