Russia Sends Military Trainers and Air Defence Systems to Niger for Security Cooperation

In a move to strengthen security cooperation with Niger Republic, Russia has deployed military trainers, air defense systems, and other equipment to the West African nation. This comes after Niger’s military government decided to enhance military ties with Russia following the expulsion of French forces that were assisting in the fight against armed rebellions in the Sahel region.

Recently, a Russian transport plane was seen landing at Niamey airport, carrying the latest military equipment and instructors from Russia’s Ministry of Defence. The aim is to help Niger install an air defense system to ensure full control of its airspace, as reported by Broadcaster Tele Sahel.

According to State-run Radio Television du Niger, 100 Russian military instructors have already arrived in Niamey. Russia, which has been actively seeking to expand its influence in Africa, portrays itself as a friendly nation with no colonial history on the continent.

Niger, known as one of the world’s poorest countries, had previously collaborated with Western allies in combating armed groups in the Sahel. However, since a coup last July that ousted elected President Mohamed Bazoum, the country has turned to Russia for support.

This development signifies a significant shift in alliances and highlights Russia’s growing presence in the region. Stay tuned for more updates on this evolving partnership between Russia and Niger.
