Seven drown in hotels’ pools, beach in Lagos

Seven persons drowned in the swimming pools of three hotels and on an Island in Lagos State this week, The Nation has learnt.

Two of the victims were said to have drowned at a hotel in Mushin, one in a hotel’s pool on the Island and another one at a hotel located in the Shasha area of the state.

While one victim drowned at Ibeshe Island, two others fell in the lagoon from the Third Mainland Bridge after their over speeding bus met with a fatal accident.

Details obtained from the police yesterday revealed that the cases of drowning occurred between April 8 and 12.

It was gathered that one of the victims, Fawad Adeyemi, 16, drowned on April 10 while swimming at a hotel’s pool at Marina, Lagos Island.

He was said to have drowned around 4pm, was rescued from the pool and rushed to the general hospital where he was confirmed dead by the doctor on duty.

Around 7:30pm of the same April 10, two young boys, it was learnt, drowned at a Guest House in Mushin.

The victims whose names and addresses were yet unknown, were said to have been swimming when they got drowned.

It was also unclear whether they were lodgers at the Guest House considering the time they were in the pool.

On April 11, another man identified as Hakeem Fawas, 20, drowned at Ibeshe Beach while swimming with his friend who filed a complaint at the local police station.

Police spokesman, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed that the incidents were reported, adding that the scenes were visited, necessary actions taken and investigations opened.

He also confirmed that the body of one of the victims of the Third Mainland Bridge accident had been recovered from the lagoon by the Marine Police, adding that search was on for the second person.

Hundey urged residents to take necessary safety precautions when swimming whether at a pool or in a beach.
