E-Tech Systems: Malawi’s New Passport System Supplier Resolving Crisis

The era of TechnoBrain has officially ended, as E-Tech Systems steps in as the new passport system supplier for Malawi’s Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services. The government has enlisted the help of this local information and communications technology (ICT) firm to address the ongoing passport crisis.

After the cancellation of a $60.8 million contract with TechnoBrain in December 2021 due to alleged mismanagement, E-Tech Systems, based in Lilongwe, has been brought on board to tackle the challenges faced by the immigration department. Ministry of Justice spokesperson Frank Namangale confirmed this development, emphasizing the government’s commitment to resolving the issues at hand.

E-Tech Systems, established in 2010, offers a range of ICT solutions including software development, website hosting, computer hardware installation, and network systems management. Their expertise extends to interfacing with third-party providers and consultants, making them a valuable asset in the field of technology solutions.

Despite the temporary re-engagement of TechnoBrain in 2023, the passport system faced further setbacks in February 2024 when a system failure led to the suspension of passport issuance. President Lazarus Chakwera revealed that the system had been hacked, with demands for ransom from digital mercenaries adding to the chaos.

In response to the crisis, the government directed the Immigration Department to explore alternative solutions to resume passport printing within a tight deadline. While suspicions have been raised regarding TechnoBrain’s involvement in the hacking incident, the company has expressed willingness to assist in resolving the issue.

As Malawi navigates through this turbulent period in passport processing, the collaboration with E-Tech Systems signals a new chapter in the country’s technological advancement. With a focus on efficiency and security, the partnership aims to restore confidence in the passport issuance process and ensure smooth operations moving forward.
