The Federal Government of Nigeria has initiated a 15-day emergency plan to bolster fuel supply and mitigate the ongoing scarcity affecting various parts of the country. According to government sources, Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) import vessels are set to continually arrive and discharge at various depots, ensuring a steady flow to filling stations nationwide.
The Major Energies Marketers Association of Nigeria confirmed the reception of approximately 300 million litres of fuel from eight vessels in Lagos this week alone. This development follows the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority’s update, provided by the South-West Regional Coordinator Ayo Cardoso, about 325 million litres have already been offloaded at depots as of Tuesday.
Cardoso emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring that fuel reaches all corners of the country, with more shipments expected to arrive within the next two weeks. He assured that the distribution of PMS would be equitable across states, aiming to significantly reduce the long queues currently seen at filling stations.
Despite these efforts, the effects of fuel scarcity have heavily impacted daily life in states such as Ogun, where residents faced increased transportation costs, leading many to walk significant distances. The government calls for calm, promising that the situation will stabilize as the new measures take effect.
