Dorsey Leaves Bluesky Board Amidst Speculation

Jack Dorsey, the co-founder of Twitter, recently announced grants for open protocols from his philanthropic Start Small initiative. This announcement sparked inquiries about his involvement in the Bluesky project. When asked if he was still on the Bluesky board, Dorsey responded with a brief “no,” declining to elaborate further despite follow-up queries.

As of Sunday morning, Bluesky’s corporate FAQ still listed Dorsey as a board member, raising questions about the timing of his departure. However, later that day, Bluesky issued a statement expressing gratitude for Dorsey’s contributions and confirming his exit from the board. The company emphasized its commitment to building a social network that empowers users and announced plans to search for a new board member.

Dorsey initially introduced Bluesky in 2019 while he was still CEO of Twitter. The project aimed to develop an open and decentralized standard for social media. Since then, Bluesky has evolved into an independent public benefit corporation led by CEO Jay Graber, with venture capital backing. It opened to the general public in February.

Despite being associated with the project, Dorsey’s departure from Bluesky went largely unnoticed until recently. Last year, he reportedly deleted his Bluesky account and remained relatively quiet about his involvement. However, his influence in the tech world remains evident, as he continues to engage actively on social media platforms like X.

Over the weekend, Dorsey’s activity on X included corporate announcements and commentary on topics ranging from the feud between Drake and Kendrick Lamar to advocating for user rights and freedom technology.
