Google is preparing to launch its own conversational artificial‑intelligence service, called Bard. Powered by the Language Model for Dialogue Applications (LaMDA), Bard aims to offer improved capabilities for both users and developers. The service is positioned as a direct competitor to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which has become a global phenomenon since its debut in December 2022. Bard is currently available to trusted testers, with a broader public release planned after Google’s recent search‑trends report highlighted growing worldwide interest in AI.
One key attribute of Bard is its nonstop rivalry with ChatGPT. Google, renowned for its innovation, feels pressure to match the rapid growth of ChatGPT, especially after a 3.6 % drop in ad revenue contributed to missed earnings expectations in 2022. By introducing Bard, Google seeks to re‑establish its competitive edge in the conversational‑AI market.
Bard also promises a stronger channel of information. Google describes it as a “conversational AI service” that leverages the depth of global knowledge combined with advanced intelligence. Unlike ChatGPT, which is limited to data up to 2021, Bard can provide answers about recent events, thanks to its up‑to‑date large language models.
The platform is designed with developers in mind. CEO Sundar Pichai announced plans to invite individual developers, creators, and enterprises to build innovative applications using Google’s Generative Language API. Bard will be powered primarily by LaMDA, with additional models supporting utilities such as AI‑driven search, image generation, and music creation soon to be made available.
Integration with Google Chrome will enable Bard to process complex information and present multiple perspectives in easy‑to‑digest formats. Pichai explained that AI‑powered search features will help users quickly grasp the big picture, whether by exploring diverse viewpoints—like blogs from musicians who play both piano and guitar—or diving deeper into related topics such as beginner steps for a new skill.
Finally, Bard serves as a gateway to a more lightweight version of the Language Model for Dialogue Applications, addressing the high usage and occasional outages experienced by ChatGPT. Pichai emphasized that external feedback combined with internal testing will ensure Bard’s responses meet high standards for quality, safety, and real‑world accuracy. The current testing phase is intended to refine Bard’s quality and speed before its wider release.
