All Progressives Congress presidential candidate Asiwaju Bola Tinubu appealed to Nigerians on Tuesday to remain calm and allow the federal government to address the ongoing fuel shortage and the scarcity of new naira notes. The Central Bank of Nigeria’s short deadline for transitioning to the new currency has heightened tensions, prompting protests in several states and cities over the past week. Viral videos show half‑clad customers breaking down bank gates and threatening officials, underscoring public frustration.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja, Tinubu expressed sympathy for Nigerians—especially the most vulnerable—who have borne the brunt of the Central Bank’s new naira policy and the irregular fuel supply. He praised the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation for the fuel relief being experienced in the Federal Capital Territory and urged the company to extend similar assistance to other regions. Tinubu also called on the CBN to adopt a more flexible approach to the deadline for phasing out old notes, noting that the policy’s unintended consequences have caused widespread hardship.
Tinubu highlighted the plight of cash‑strapped farmers forced to sell their produce at extremely low prices to avoid total loss. “This is a challenging period for our country, with people waiting for hours to obtain fuel or withdraw cash from banks,” he said. “I empathise with Nigerians, particularly the poor, who have suffered most from the CBN’s naira policy and fuel scarcity.”
He urged citizens to stay peaceful while the government works on solutions, warning that opposition forces seek to create a state of national siege that could disrupt upcoming elections. “We must reject such attempts, remain resolute, and protect our democracy by ensuring a peaceful, orderly election,” Tinubu declared. “I am in this race to bring renewed hope and prosperity to all Nigerians. United in purpose, no challenge will be insurmountable. If elected, I will work for security, economic prosperity, national unity, and cohesion, building a country that brings joy to us all and pride to every Black person worldwide.”
