The spokesperson for the Coalition of United Political Parties, Ikenga Ugochinyere, was attacked at his residence on Tuesday, just three weeks after a similar assault in Akokwa, Imo State. On 14 January in Akokwa, gunmen on motorcycles broke into Ugochinyere’s home, set fire to the house and cars, and killed his uncle along with three other people. At the time, Ugochinyere—who is the Peoples Democratic Party’s House of Representatives candidate for the Ideato North and Ideato South federal constituency—raised the alarm, calling for help.
On Tuesday, Ugochinyere sent an “SOS” message to journalists via WhatsApp, warning that he was again under attack. He wrote: “SOS, we are under attack again. My house is under attack by armed men with explosives and heavy gunfire.” The latest incident has reportedly caused panic among members of his campaign team. Attempts to contact the spokesperson for the Imo State Police Command were unsuccessful at the time of this report. Details to follow.
