Nigerian Army Detains Shop Owner After Banex Plaza Clash

In a disturbing incident at Banex Plaza in Abuja, Nigerian Army personnel detained Caleb Onyemaeachi Chidera, a shop owner who had honoured their invitation. The clash occurred on Saturday between soldiers and customers, resulting in a violent altercation. The military police’s actions were reportedly a reprisal for an earlier confrontation between four military police personnel and traders at the electronics and telecommunications gadget market.

Despite FCT Commissioner of Police Bennet Igweh’s intervention to settle the initial scuffle, the army returned to the plaza on Monday morning. They arrested individuals allegedly involved in the assault against their officers. Among those identified was Enomfon Abasiono Udofia, a trader who frequented Caleb’s shop.

Caleb’s wife revealed that the army refused to release her husband, subjecting him to brutal treatment without formal charges. Currently held at Mambilla Barracks in Asokoro, Caleb’s relatives have been denied access. His wife, who recently gave birth via surgery, expressed concern for his well-being after receiving distressing messages about his torture and broken foot.
