House of Representatives Urges Nigerian Army to Reopen Banex Plaza

The House of Representatives has called on the Nigerian Army to reopen Banex Plaza in Abuja, ending what they termed an illegal shutdown of the market. The Army closed the plaza on Tuesday following reports that an officer had been mobbed.

On Thursday, the House adopted a motion presented by Whingan Olusesan, a lawmaker from Lagos State, urging the reopening of the market. In his motion, Olusesan detailed the events leading to the mob action and criticized the military’s response, advocating for better crisis management using surveillance technology.

The motion received widespread support and was adopted when put to a vote by Deputy Speaker Ben Kalu.
