The Kano State House of Assembly has dissolved all five emirate councils, granting Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf the authority to appoint new Emirs. This decision followed deliberations and the passage of the Kano State Emirate Council Amendment Bill during Thursday’s plenary session.
Deputy Speaker Alhaji Muhammad Bello Butu Butu explained that repealing the law would restore Kano’s lost glory, which had been diminished by the division into five emirates. Majority Leader Alhaji Lawan Hussaini Dala emphasized that the emirate council, as a custodian of culture, was undermined by the creation of additional emirates.
With the amendment, all five emirate councils—Kano, Bichi, Gaya, Rano, and Karaye—are abolished. The Commissioner for Local Governments will oversee the transitional arrangements.
The new law reinstates the five demoted kingmakers and empowers them to select a new Emir, potentially reinstating former Central Bank of Nigeria governor Muhammadu Sanusi as the sole Emir of Kano. The bill now awaits the governor’s assent.
