Nobel Laureate Prof Wole Soyinka has voiced his hope that Peter Obi, the former Labour Party presidential candidate, refrains from contesting the next election. In a recent interview with Noble Nigeria, Soyinka criticized Obi’s leadership, citing concerns over the conduct of the Labour Party during the previous election campaign.
Soyinka condemned the actions of Obi’s supporters, known as the ‘Obidient Movement,‘ particularly their online harassment, which targeted him and other prominent figures. He expressed disgust at the orchestrated insults and accused Obi of controlling the online trolls responsible for such behaviour.
Reflecting on the situation, Soyinka emphasized the need for leadership that fosters unity and integrity, expressing disappointment in those who condone and encourage divisive actions. He warned of the consequences of sowing discord and urged for responsible leadership that prioritizes the nation’s well-being.
Soyinka’s remarks underscore a broader concern about the influence of online trolls and the importance of ethical leadership in Nigerian politics.
