Finding a song that’s stuck in your head but you can’t quite remember can be frustrating, but Google has introduced a solution to ease this task. With the new feature called “play, sing or hum a song,” Android smartphone users can now discover a song by humming or singing to their device.

Similar to Apple’s Shazam, this feature doesn’t require users to know the lyrics or the exact song playing in order to identify it. Currently available on the YouTube Music app for Android, this feature aims to provide users with instant song recognition.

During tests, YouTube Music accurately identified four out of five songs, regardless of the language (English, Hindi, or Kannada). This feature proves especially useful for those trying to recall a song they heard some time ago, relying solely on how it sounds rather than its name or lyrics.

In addition to humming, users can also play or sing a song to increase the chances of accurate identification. While a similar feature has been available on Google Assistant for some time, its integration into the YouTube Music app provides users with a convenient one-stop solution for identifying and playing songs.

How to Use “Play, Sing or Hum” to Find a Song on YouTube Music:

  1. Open the YouTube app on your Android phone.
  2. Click on the search icon (magnifying lens icon) located at the top right corner.
  3. Select the icon resembling a music wave.
  4. Start humming or singing into your device.

Depending on the complexity of the song, the app may require approximately five to ten seconds of humming or audio samples to identify it. Once the song is recognized, users can directly play it on the YouTube Music app.
