Iraq Sentences Seven Drug Dealers to Death, Including Foreigner

An Iraqi court has issued death sentences for seven drug dealers, one of whom is a foreign national, according to a statement from the Supreme Judicial Council. The Central Criminal Court handed down the verdict, finding the individuals guilty of trafficking narcotic substances. However, the statement did not specify the nationality of the foreigner involved.

The convicts were found guilty of importing and exporting narcotic substances from neighbouring countries. This decision underscores the ongoing battle against drug trafficking in Iraq, a challenge exacerbated by the chaos and conflicts that have persisted since the U.S. invasion in 2003.

Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani emphasized combating drug trafficking in May 2023. He highlighted the link between drug dealing and terrorism financing, noting that drug circulation thrives amidst the shadow of terrorism. This recent court ruling reflects Iraq’s commitment to tackling the menace of drug trafficking and its associated threats.
