Fresh facts have emerged about the assault on the residence of Ikenga Ugochinyere, spokesperson for the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP). The attack occurred on Tuesday, barely three weeks after a similar incident in Akokwa, Imo State. Our correspondent learned that Ugochinyere was not present during the latest raid; instead, his brother, Ikedi Ikegwuonu, was abducted. The assailants reportedly demanded that the brother reveal Ugochinyere’s whereabouts.
The earlier attack, on January 14 in Akokwa, involved gunmen on motorcycles who invaded and set fire to Ugochinyere’s house and cars, killing his uncle and three others. At that time, Ugochinyere, who is the Peoples Democratic Party’s House of Representatives candidate for the Ideato North and Ideato South federal constituency, raised the alarm and called for help.
On Tuesday, Ugochinyere issued another SOS message to journalists, stating, “We are under attack again. My house is under attack by armed men with explosives and heavy gunfire.” Sources say the latest incident caused panic among his campaign team. The attackers, described as masked and heavily armed, targeted workmen—masons, welders, carpenters, electricians, and mechanics—who were repairing damage from the previous attack. Some workers fled and called from hiding to inform the CUPP spokesperson of the assault.
The gunmen reportedly roamed the property for about 20 minutes unchallenged, despite the immediate SOS messages that Ugochinyere received.
