Former Premier League footballer Christian Atsu has been “successfully rescued” from under the rubble of a collapsed building after the devastating earthquake that struck southern Turkey. The Ghana Football Association confirmed that the 31‑year‑old, who previously played for Chelsea and Newcastle United, is now receiving medical treatment.
Atsu was reported missing on Monday when a 7.8‑magnitude quake hit southern Turkey and northern Syria, causing widespread destruction. He had joined Turkish club Hatayspor last summer, and the club’s sporting director, Taner Savut, was also reported to be trapped. In the early hours of the disaster, numerous after‑shocks followed, including a 7.5‑magnitude tremor.
Initial reports on Monday night claimed that Atsu had been found with breathing difficulties and an injury to his right foot, but Hatayspor later discredited that information. Vice‑president Mustafa Ozat subsequently confirmed to Radyo Gol that Atsu had indeed been rescued and was now under medical care.
The club’s sporting director, Taner Savut, remains missing. Turkish sports presenter Yagız Sabuncuoğlu appealed on social media for a crane to assist in the rescue at Ronesans Residence, where the building had collapsed on its side. “A crane is needed urgently for Ronesans Residence, where Taner Savut is located! Time is running out!” he wrote.
It was later reported that Atsu had been located on the ninth floor of the building before it collapsed in the earthquake’s aftermath.
