President Bola Tinubu confirmed a bilateral meeting with South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa, focusing on economic cooperation between the two African nations. The discussion followed Ramaphosa’s recent re-election and inauguration, which Tinubu attended.
Departing Lagos State for South Africa earlier this week, Tinubu joined the swearing-in ceremony for Ramaphosa, re-elected by Parliament on June 14, 2024. Despite circulating social media reports alleging that Tinubu was snubbed by his South African counterpart, the Nigerian President refuted these claims.
In a post on his official X handle, Tinubu stated, “President Ramaphosa’s warm welcome and dedication to mutual respect and cooperation reflects the depth of our relationship.”
During their bilateral meeting, the presidents discussed strategies to bolster trade and enhance economic ties between Nigeria and South Africa. “We intend to work together to address our countries’ challenges through robust trade and economic strategies, and I am hopeful that we can lead our nations towards increased prosperity and unity,” Tinubu said.
He expressed optimism about the future collaboration, highlighting the importance of this partnership at a critical time for the continent’s progress.
