Libreville, Gabon – Gabon’s government has resolved its payment dispute with the World Bank, following issues that previously hindered the nation’s ability to meet its financial commitments by the June 30 deadline.

In an undated statement, Gabon’s Ministry of Public Accounts confirmed that the arrears had been paid back to the World Bank. This announcement came after a confidential World Bank note, dated July 1, was leaked and widely circulated. The document revealed that the World Bank had suspended Gabon’s right to make loans and grant withdrawals due to its failure to honour obligations amounting to approximately $17 million.

The payment delays were attributed to technical issues and inherited debt from the administration of former President Ali Bongo, who was ousted by a military junta last year. The current transitional government reiterated its commitment to settling all outstanding debts.

The resolution of this dispute marks a significant step towards stabilizing Gabon’s financial relationships and underscores the transitional government’s dedication to fulfilling its international obligations.
