Prime Minister Narendra Modi Strengthens Ties with Russia During Moscow Visit

Moscow – During his official two-day visit to Russia, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the Indian community in Moscow on Tuesday, underscoring the deep-rooted bond between the two nations. Speaking to the Indian expatriates, Modi reflected on the historical partnership between India and Russia, stating, “When Indians hear the word ‘Russia,’ the first words that come to their minds are ‘India’s companion in happiness and in sorrow.’”

The visit aims to fortify the longstanding relationship between India and Russia, focusing on enhancing bilateral cooperation. Modi expressed satisfaction over the joint efforts of both nations in working “shoulder to shoulder to provide new energy to global prosperity.”

On Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin extended a warm welcome to Modi, offering him a tour of his suburban residence in Novo-Ogaryovo. The meeting highlighted the significance of expanding trade relations, with a particular emphasis on developing a maritime corridor linking India’s primary port in Chennai to Vladivostok, a strategic gateway to Russia’s Far East.

As the ongoing conflict in Ukraine continues, Moscow’s arms industries have been crucial in supplying the Russian military. In response to the war, India has been diversifying its defence acquisitions by increasing purchases from the US, Israel, France, and Italy.

Putin’s foreign travel has been limited following an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court in 2023 over his actions in Ukraine. Modi’s visit comes at a time when efforts to bolster diplomatic ties could play a significant role in enhancing Putin’s international standing.
