Imo State Commissioner of Police Faces Fresh Pressure to Step Down
A socio-cultural organization in Nigeria, Aka Igbo, has called for the removal of the Commissioner of Police in Imo State, Aboki Danjuma, from his position. The group alleges that Danjuma has consistently arrested and detained innocent people on the orders of the state governor, Hope Uzodinma, since his re-election in November 2023.
Aka Igbo accuses Danjuma of involvement in human rights abuses and the detention of persons for over three months without trial. In a petition, the group alleged that the Commissioner of Police has failed to protect innocent lives and property, instead prioritizing the detention of government appointees and members of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The petition, which has sparked widespread outrage, highlighted the case of Noble Atulegwu, a former Commissioner for Lands in Imo State, who was arrested by Danjuma on the orders of the governor in November 2023. While in custody, Atulegwu fell ill and was rushed to the police clinic.
Aka Igbo has urged the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to take immediate action and remove Danjuma from his position, citing Section 4 of the Police Act. The group’s demand for the Commissioner’s removal comes amidst growing concerns over human rights abuses and allegations of corruption in Imo State.
The incident has sparked widespread condemnation, with many calling for greater accountability and transparency in the state’s law enforcement agencies.
