Missing Governors mar Niger Delta Stakeholders Summit in Port Harcourt
Port Harcourt, Nigeria – A unique snapshot of the ongoing Niger Delta Stakeholders Summit in Port Harcourt, Rivers State Capital, has emerged as key stakeholders, including former President Goodluck Jonathan and some former governors, were present at the event, but several sitting governors of the South-South were missing.
According to PUNCH Online, while some key political stakeholders from the Niger Delta region, including Jonathan and Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, as well as stakeholders from other geo-political zones, such as Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, were in attendance, Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, was the only South-South governor physically present at the time of filing this report.
The South-South governors who were not physically present sent their deputies to the summit, themed "Renewed Hope for Sustainable Development in the Niger Delta Region." Former governors from the region, including Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State, Donald Duke of Cross River State, and Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State, were also present.
Notably, the Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, who is the host of the summit, was represented by the Head of Service of the State, George Nwaeke. Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, was absent from the summit, while President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, was present on behalf of President Bola Tinubu.
The event brought together key stakeholders to deliberate on ways to promote sustainable development in the Niger Delta region, a region rich in oil resources but plagued by environmental degradation, pollution, and social unrest.
