El-Rufai Denies Sending Cryptic Message to Unsettle Tinubu’s Presidency

Supreme Court Grants Autonomy to Local Governments in Nigeria

Nigeria’s Supreme Court has delivered a significant judgment, granting autonomy to local governments in the country. According to the court’s ruling, all federal funds for local government councils will now be paid directly into their accounts. This decision is a major shift from the previous system, where funds were managed by state governments.

The ruling was handed down by Justice Emmanuel Agim, who led a seven-member panel of justices. The court also prohibited state governors from receiving, tampering with, or withholding funds meant for local governments. Furthermore, the court barred governors from dissolving democratically elected officials for local governments, deeming such actions a breach of the 1999 Constitution.

The decision has sparked reactions from various quarters, including a cryptic message posted by former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai. El-Rufai’s message, which read "From God, we all came and to Him, we shall all return," was widely shared on social media. However, the former governor has denied sending the message with the intention of unsettling President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

El-Rufai clarified that his message was simply a reminder of the ultimate accountability and judgment of God, and not a cryptic message intended for any individual. The former governor expressed concern that his message had unsettled some people and distressed others, stating that he did not want to cause further unrest.

The Supreme Court’s decision is a significant step towards decentralization in Nigeria, and its implications will be closely watched by stakeholders in the country.
