Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has approved the use of the Yakubu Gowon Stadium in Elekahia, Port Harcourt, for the presidential campaign rally of All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate Bola Tinubu, scheduled for 15 February 2023. The announcement was made by Tony Okocha, the Rivers State coordinator of the Bola Tinubu Campaign Organisation, during a news briefing in Port Harcourt on Wednesday. Okocha said that all arrangements have been put in place to ensure a smooth, hitch‑free rally for the APC presidential standard‑bearer.
According to Okocha, Governor Wike, acting out of benevolence, approved the venue without demanding the N5 million fee prescribed by Executive Order 21. He emphasized that Wike “in his usual magnanimity has granted the approval of an alternate venue, the Yakubu Gowon Stadium, Elekahia, Port Harcourt, for the presidential campaign rally scheduled to hold on 15 February 2023 absolutely free of charge, subject to the issuance of a written guarantee of the safety and security of the facilities at the venue due to the violence recorded in recent rallies by the governorship standard‑bearer of the party in the state.”
Okocha, who also serves as the coordinator of Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s (BAT‑Vanguard) campaign in the South‑South, disclosed that an eleven‑member committee has been established to coordinate and ensure the successful hosting of the rally in the state. He added that the state campaign committee has done its homework to secure Tinubu’s victory in Rivers State.
