Kaspersky Labs to Wind Down US Operations Amid Security Concerns

In a significant move, Russian anti-virus software maker Kaspersky Labs has announced plans to gradually wind down its US operations from July 20. This decision comes nearly a month after the Biden administration announced plans to bar the sale of Kaspersky’s software in the country, citing security risks posed by Russia’s influence on the cybersecurity company.

According to reports, Kaspersky will eliminate all US-based positions and has already stopped allowing consumers to purchase products on its website, citing "purchase unavailable for US customers." The company’s senior leadership, including the chief business development officer, chief operating officer, legal officer, and corporate communications chief, were slapped with sanctions in June, also citing cybersecurity risks.

The news of Kaspersky’s plan to leave the US was first reported by CNN. The new restrictions by the US government on inbound sales of Kaspersky software will come into effect on September 29, effectively blocking downloads of software updates, resales, and licensing of the product. Additionally, new US business for Kaspersky will be blocked 30 days after the restrictions were first announced on June 20.

This development marks a significant blow to Kaspersky’s operations in the US, which has been a major market for the company. The move is seen as a response to growing concerns over Russia’s influence on the cybersecurity industry and the potential risks it poses to national security.
