Gavi Sends Cholera Vaccines to Nigeria Amid Ongoing Outbreak

Nigeria Prepares to Combat Deadly Cholera Outbreak with Fresh Vaccines

In a breakthrough announcement, the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation (Gavi) has revealed that cholera vaccines will soon be delivered to Nigeria to help curb the ongoing outbreak. The news comes as the country continues to grapple with a rapidly spreading disease, which has already claimed 103 lives.

Gavi’s CEO, Sania Nishtar, confirmed the development in a statement, stressing the organisation’s readiness to partner with key agencies, including UNICEF and the World Health Organisation (WHO), to contain the outbreak.

“We stand ready to work with our partners, UNICEF and WHO, to support Minister Muhammad Pate, Nigeria’s federal ministry of health, and the NCDC’s timely efforts to contain this outbreak and protect those at highest risk,” said Nishtar.

The statement follows the news that Nigeria has recorded 3,623 suspected cholera cases across 34 states, prompting concern about the potential for further outbreaks. Gavi, meanwhile, has confirmed that its vaccine stockpile is now fully replenished and production is continuing at maximum capacity.

With these new vaccines on the way, hope is emerging that the worst may soon be behind Nigeria as the country strives to combat this devastating outbreak.
