Twins’ Star Shortstop Carlos Correa Heads to Injured List with Plantar Fasciitis

Minnesota Twins shortstop Carlos Correa has been placed on the 10-day injured list due to plantar fasciitis in his right foot. The 29-year-old Correa missed the 2024 MLB All-Star Game due to the condition and will wear a walking boot for the next couple of days. His IL stint is retroactive to July 16, according to Twins manager Rocco Baldelli.

Correa received a platelet-rich plasma injection during the All-Star break and will likely be sidelined for a few weeks. The injury is not as serious as last year’s, according to Correa, who has been dealing with nagging pain in his right heel. He’s familiar with plantar fasciitis, having played through the final four months of last season with the condition in his left foot.

In the meantime, utility man Austin Martin has been activated from the IL to take Correa’s spot on the roster. Martin has played left field, center field, and second base this season, batting.265 with a.702 OPS and nine doubles.

All-Star Willi Castro will start at shortstop in Saturday’s matchup with the Milwaukee Brewers. Castro has played 24 games at the position this season, starting 20, and is batting.265 with a.774 OPS, 22 doubles, seven homers, 30 RBI, and 10 stolen bases.

The Twins also placed pitcher Chris Paddack on the 15-day IL with a right forearm strain. Paddack, a six-year veteran, has a 4.99 ERA with 79 strikeouts in 88 1/3 innings in 17 starts this season. The team called up Edouard Julien from Triple-A St. Paul to fill Paddack’s roster spot. Julien batted.207 with a.676 OPS, seven homers, and six steals before being sent down.

Correa’s injury is a significant blow to the Twins, who are currently in the midst of a tight playoff race. The team will need to rely on its depth to fill the void left by Correa’s absence.
