Heavy Rain Disrupts First Medal Day at the Olympics
The first full day of medal action at the Olympics came under siege by heavy rain as attention turned to sport after the opening ceremony in Paris. The spectacle began promisingly, with four events up for grabs, including mixed-team 10-metre air rifle finals and tennis matches at Roland Garros.
However, the wet weather, which wreaked havoc on Friday’s bold opening ceremony, had other plans, leaving two events in danger of being postponed. The men’s street skateboarding competition, scheduled to take place at the iconic Place de la Concorde in Paris, has been pushed back until Monday, organizers said. Similarly, the initial rounds of tennis at Roland Garros were beset by rain.
In addition to the rain-changed itinerary, the International Olympic Committee issued an apology for its embarrassing blunder during Friday night’s amphibious opening ceremony when South Korean athletes were mistakenly announced as North Koreans.
Meanwhile, the first events are underway, showcasing an eclectic mix of sports on Saturday’s agenda. Action unfolds across various disciplines, including surfing on the distant French Pacific island of Tahiti, rowing, hockey, basketball, badminton, swimming, cycling, and diving.
In an event widely anticipated to be thrilling, defending champion Ariarne Titmus of Australia will put her stamp on the women’s 400-metre freestyle at La Defense Arena, joined by Canadian powerhouse Summer McIntosh and American heavy hitter Katie Ledecky seeking her Olympic revenge.
Reining French Open champions Iga Swiatek and Carlos Alcaraz, who won the clay-court finals earlier this year, will take part in action on the Roland Garros court, while Chinese marksman duo Huang Yuting and Sheng Lihao are projected to excel in shooting.
